Road Transport

The sector where molecular energy's role has narrowed most, and where being honest about that matters commercially.

How molecular energy affects road transport

Batteries have won light vehicles decisively and are advancing quickly into heavy trucking, which has compressed the case for hydrogen in road transport considerably compared with expectations a decade ago. A real niche remains in the heaviest, highest-utilisation, longest-range duties where charging time and payload penalties bite, and in depot fleets where refuelling can be centralised. Projects assuming a broad hydrogen road-transport market are usually working from outdated assumptions.

What competes

  • Battery-electric trucks, improving rapidly and cheaper per kilometre where feasible
  • Hydrogen fuel cells for the heaviest, highest-utilisation duties
  • Biomethane and LNG in heavy road freight
  • e-fuels for existing fleets without modification

Where the commercial opportunities are

Depot-based heavy fleets where refuelling is centralised and utilisation is high

Long-haul corridors with refuelling along defined routes

Buses and municipal fleets, frequently policy-supported

Refuelling infrastructure serving multiple anchor fleets rather than open retail

Questions

Is hydrogen losing to batteries in road transport?

In light vehicles, decisively yes. In heavy trucking the picture is closer but batteries have been gaining, and pretending otherwise leads to projects that fail. The durable hydrogen case is the heaviest, highest-utilisation, longest-range duty where charging time and payload loss are genuinely binding constraints.

What makes a hydrogen refuelling project work?

Anchor demand. Open retail stations with speculative demand have a poor record. Depot fleets with known daily consumption — buses, refuse collection, regional logistics — give the utilisation that makes the capital work, and additional demand can be added afterwards.
