Advisory
Which technology, and what it will cost you to be wrong.
Technology selection in molecular energy is made hard by the fact that vendors compete on different metrics. MolecularX normalises the comparison: the same criteria, the same boundary conditions, the same cost basis, applied across the options actually available to you.
hybrid Led by MolecularX, with specialist elements delivered through the Partner Network. The split is agreed in writing before work starts.
The problem
Datasheet efficiency, nameplate capacity and headline capex are not comparable across vendors, because each is quoted at a different boundary. A stack efficiency that excludes balance of plant and a system efficiency that includes it can differ by a fifth — enough to invert a ranking.
What you end up with
A technology decision you can defend to an investment committee and to your own engineering team, with the trade-offs documented.
What this includes
- A normalised comparison across the options that are genuinely available to your project
- Scoring on capex, opex, efficiency, maturity, carbon intensity, scalability and supply chain
- The failure modes and operational complexity each option brings
- A recommendation with the reasoning exposed, so your engineers can challenge it
How we approach it
Fix the boundary first
Everything is quoted to the same system boundary before anything is compared. Most of the apparent disagreement between vendors disappears at this step.
Score against your constraints
Feedstock, water, power profile, footprint, grid connection and local supply chain change the ranking. There is no context-free best electrolyser.
Weigh maturity honestly
Technology readiness, reference installations and vendor durability matter as much as performance. A better machine from a vendor who may not exist in five years is a project risk.
State what would change the answer
Every recommendation comes with the conditions under which it flips.
Questions
Are you independent of technology vendors?
Yes. MolecularX does not resell equipment and does not take vendor commissions on technology assessment work. Where a vendor relationship exists anywhere in the group, it is disclosed in the engagement.
Do you do detailed engineering?
No. Assessment and selection are in scope; detailed process engineering, CFD, HAZOP and certification are delivered through the MolecularX Partner Network, and we say which is which before the work starts.
Which technologies do you cover?
Production (alkaline, PEM, AEM and solid-oxide electrolysis, reforming with capture), conversion (ammonia synthesis and cracking, methanol, synthetic fuels), storage, transport, purification, fuel cells and the balance-of-plant equipment around them.
